Cichon Family Foundation
It is the intent of the CICHON FOUNDATION to help provide a better life for Veterans and their families. I myself am a Viet Nam combat veteran and have witnessed the pain and hardships veterans and their families endure. In 1968 at the age 19, I was drafted into the U.S. Army. I completed my basic training at Fort Knox, KY. after which, I received orders to attend aircraft maintenance and crew chief training at Ft. Knox, KY. In April of 1969, I was ordered to report to D Troop 3rd Squadron of the Fourth Cavalry assigned to provide air support to the 25th Infantry Division in CuChi, Viet Nam. It was here that I was assigned my aircraft and crew chief duties. In March of 1970 my pilot nominated me to receive The Bronze Star for my meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces.
I thank God to consider me one of the fortunate soldiers who returned safely home to a loving and supportive family with little physical or emotional scars. The dedicated men and women who have served our great country deserve more than the government provides. I have been fortunate enough in life to be able to show, share, and try to effect possible change to those deserving of help. Therefore, my wife, Carlia and I established THE CICHON FAMILY FOUNDATION to help fill the gap between benefits and need. Our goal is to provide assistance with physical and emotional rehabilitation for veterans and their families. We hope that other individuals and businesses will join us with our quest to provide necessary resources to improve the quality of life for those who have given so much to preserve our freedoms.
Centaur 858
Richard (Dick) Rossell grew up in Lennon Michigan. His best friend since they were 6 years old was drafted right after graduating Durand high school. They were inseparable friends, so Dick signed up with him at Ft. Wayne, in Detroit. They went to basic training together at Ft. Knox, Kentucky then went to Infantry Radio School together at Ft. Benning, Georgia.
They flew together to Vietnam.
Dick was assigned to the 1st aviation Brigade (helicopters) Headquarters Company at Tan Son Nhut Airbase near Saigon. Dick served in many capacities while stationed there, including door gunner on Huey helicopters. Dick also served at Bien Hoa, and Long Binh.
Both friends survived the war, and returned home.
Dick met his wife, Dawn 35 years ago where she worked as a secretary at his lawyers office. He asked her to dinner, and then fell in love. They raised 5 children, as Dick started his own very successful insurance company, then a marina business. They most recently owned and operated a woodworking and antiques business.
Richard Rossell, like so many who returned from Vietnam, discovered that when the battles are over….The war begins….Dick suffers from PTSD. Although his businesses helped distract the stress induced reality, he has been diagnosed with the debilitating effects of Agent Orange. Dick serves his community in many ways, and continually finds ways to help fellow veterans succeed in life.
